I am not the gifted gardener, but I am a better home decorator! Now that we are moving into the summer period, I toyed with buying a water fountain, but I felt like the cost was just too much. So I decided to my own water fountain using some Terra Cotta flower pots and saucers. I remember visiting some japenese tea gardens a few years ago and saw some of these water fountain structures and I now have the opportunity to try and recreate what I saw in Japan. Having visited many botanical garden events, I feel confident that I will achieve the right balance for my outdoor home decor and this new water fountain (addition to home ideas).

You will need at least two different sized flower pots, six saucers (three small ones, two medium and one large one), plastic tubing, a water fountain pump, silicone sealer, scissors, filing rod, clear sealer spray, drill and a drill bit and a large bucket.

What to do:
First, you need to soak the flower pots and saucers in water for at least one hour. This process will make it easier to drill and file the dishes and pots without having them break. Then you will want to spray the biggest saucer with clear sealer at least twice and wait for it to dry. Now that those two tasks have been completed we can move forward to drilling the holes and making grooves into the flower pot and saucers respectively (please follow the tutorial, so you know which ones need holes and which ones need groves). If the holes are too small use the filing rod to make it a bit bigger. After that is done, it is time to fit the plastic tubing through the flower pot; the pot should be facing down. Next, thread the medium saucer on top of the flower pot and cut the tube to about one inch. Apply the silicone sealer and wait for it to dry before covering it with the smaller saucer. If the tubing is too stiff to fit over the mouth of the water fountain pump, try soaking it for a few minutes in warm water to make it more pliable. Finally, it’s time to arrange the other saucers and smaller flower pot on the large dish, add a potted plant if you want to and turn your fountain on!

I found this tip on pinterest home ideas that you will need to soak the terra cotta for about an hour to prepare it for the fountain project. Saturating the clay and prevents them from breaking when it’s time to drill the holes.

Just like you soaked the saucers (decorating home ideas on a budget), do the same process for the flower pots as well, again it will prevent it from breaking because the water saturates the clay.

Pick up the filing rod and using only the waterlogged Terra Cotta saucers, file grooves in four sides of the dish.

You will file four groves again into one of the flower pots and the other flower pot, just a groove big enough to seat the plastic tubing comfortably, so everything is flush against the base saucer.

Sometimes the holes that are drilled might be too small, so use the filing rod to make it bigger if it is needed.

This part of fastening the tubing to the pump is essential! You need to make sure that the tube fits over the fountain pump’s opening or else you can have a leak or no water at all!

I was having some difficulty getting my plastic tubing on the water pump, so I soaked the end I needed in warm water, and that made it pretty pliable and solved my issue.

Now that we have attached the flower pot and saucer together cut the hose to about one inch high. Use the silicone sealer around it and let it dry. Don’t worry you will cover this up with one of the saucers and begin arranging the other pot and saucers! Now turn on the water fountain and enjoy the view!
