I know that whimsical home decor is a weakness of mine. Not to mention black white and gray home decor is especially close to my heart. So when the opportunity rolled around to implement some retro style home decor, I jumped on it! My home decor words escape me as I try to explain to people how dreary my bathroom floors were to behold. It was a beige-y pink, sad looking floor space, but now it was time to revamp and create something unusual (residential home design) using beautiful floor stencils. I have, in the past taken on diy home decorating projects but nothing like this one and no home decorating classes could prepare me for what I was about to undertake. So prepare yourselves my lovelies, this is going to be great but hard home design work!
You will need (low budget diy home decor):
Paintbrushes (I used two sizes- small one for touch-ups and the other to apply the paint this should be based on size stencil chosen.)
Floor paint – Rust-Oleum in Chalk White also BEHR floor paint in black.
Painter’s tape/ sanding tool
Stencils of your choice for the design.
Floor sealer of your choice.
Now to begin, I sanded the floor tiles gently and wiped them clean, then I taped off the edges and corners that I wanted to protect from any paint mishaps (home design ideas). After that was done, I applied the chalk white paint (two coats) and waited for the paint to dry before I used the stencil to the floor. Next, the stencils were lined up, and I gradually built the black color I applied up to what I wanted because I didn’t want the stencils to become saturated. Then, as gently as I could, I removed the stencil to see the print. Now bear in mind all of them won’t be perfect, you will have some bleeds. However, you can quickly correct that with your smaller paintbrush later on in the project. When I completed that phase I moved on to the touch ups as I mentioned earlier then I let everything dry for about a day and a half. Finally, I popped open the sealer and began the tedious process of applying the four to five coats and waiting in between applications for it to dry and start again. So, now that ALL of that was done, the floors look like a professional came in and refurbished my floors, the accessories that I use now actually make home decor sense and everything looks great!
