Best organization ideas and easy home repair DIYs using everyday household items!

Who hates creaky doors and floors raise your hands? Me too! This is just a couple of the issues I face in my home. I wanted to compile a strong list of hacks and the best organization ideas to help out anyone who has been in my position before dealing with all the annoying factors that come with home maintenance. Leaking toilets…(deep breath) I have called a plumber in more times than I can count because I suspected that there were leaks and surprise! There was none, I don’t know about you but I don’t get any grants for home repairs, so I have to use these ahem… repair home appliances (potatoes, nail polish, rubber bands, WD-40 to name a few) it might be funny to you what I deem appliances, but they are ALWAYS readily available. So don’t knock it until you try it!

These alternative home ideas (using Kool-aid) especially to spot a leak in your toilet tank can help you confirm that there is, in fact, a leak and THEN you can call the plumber in (don’t worry the kool-aid doesn’t cause any harm to the hardware) it’s simple to decipher…color in the bowl = leak and of course no color, no leak. Another familiar topic would be the slamming doors, when my wife and I were going through that "design home ideas" phase it never dawned on me that I would hate my doors as much as I did. My door slams against the wall so much that there is an impression on the paint and damage to the edge of the door, some hgtv home ideas would have been a welcome relief at that time, but not one of those tips was addressing the issue, so you know what I did instead? I bought some cabinet door bumpers and glued them to the door jam, it was as if it never existed. Trust me, this will save you many headaches in the long run!

This particular repair trick will blow your mind, and no it didn’t come from any wood repair home depot. You know when you see those dents on your wood floors and it’s like you might have to do the entire thing over? Well, I am here to let you know that you don’t have to do that at all! Get your steam iron out (yes the one for clothes) and a damp paper towel. Place the damp towel over the floor dent and plug in your iron; move the iron in circular movements over the damp towel and I promise you when you remove it there will no longer be a dent present. You’re welcome, I saved you a bunch of money and you didn’t have to switch to Geico.

Lastly, my five your old daughter wanted to bless me with some of her decals for bathroom walls. I can’t begin to explain to you what my formerly pristine white walls endured. Luckily I didn’t use a flat color water paint in that room, it was oil paint. I brought out the WD-40, yes, yes I did and I was able to get all of that crayon and marker scribbles off in half of the time, with no new paint job. So it can be done, you can retain your maple floors in the kitchen, marble in the bathroom fixtures and still have time to teach your self those new 8 ball pool tricks!

Try one of these modern home ideas for spotting a leak with kool aid!

So toilet leaks are a pain, but sometimes it’s not a leak at all and it’s some other problem, but already called a plumber in to tell you that there was no leak and now you have to pay for that. So next time you suspect that there is a leak, use one of these modern home ideas. Pour some kool-aid into the tank and flush. If there is color in the bowl, then for sure you know that there is a leak, if no color is present you are out of the woods!

an amazing home repairs tricks with a potato

an amazing home repairs tricks with a potato

It doesn’t get more rustic than an Idaho potato for this trick, this is one of my rustic home ideas repair tricks, using…that’s right a potato (half of it anyway). In our cabin the bulb broke while still screwed in and to avoid getting cut, I slapped half a potato onto the shards of glass and firmly turned the potato until the bulb was out.

Dresser top organization ideas and fixing hard to remove screws.

Dresser top organization ideas and fixing hard to remove screws.

We have been planning for a while now a (dresser top organization ideas) family meeting to decide who gets to do what in our organization overhaul of rooms that are in dire need of attention. I foolishly choose to dismantle the dressers, the thing is there was no traction from the screws and I was stuck until I got a thick, wide rubber band and used it to grip the groove in the head of the screws (with the screwdriver tip) forcing the screw loose when turned. Thank goodness!

Cool home ideas to remove stripped screw!

Cool home ideas to remove stripped screw!

So we used in our last post the rubber band to create traction and remove the screw using manpower. Good news is we have more cool home ideas for removing stripped screws! I got myself a wide enough rubber band and gently tapped the head of the drill bit into the stripped space to kind of secure the rubber band to the bit. Then I turned the power drill on and it came out faster than I anticipated!

Fix Squeaking floor boards

Fix Squeaking floor boards

Concrete home repair depot has nothing on us, our floorboards squeaked like crazy when we walked across them. It wasn’t until I dropped some baby powder into the grooves of the floor planks that it stopped.

Pack in baby powder to stop floor board squeaks

Most times you don’t need to do much but just sprinkle the powder into the spaces to stop the squeaking. However, there are times when we have to press it into the groove and to do that I needed to borrow something from the (tools organization ideas bin) handy man’s kit. In this case, he had a brush that allowed us to pack the powder into the spaces.

Fix a dent in the floor board using just an iron!

Fix a dent in the floor board using just an iron!

Dents on the hardwood floor are never attractive! But you do not have to spend a dime repairing them. Get your self a damp paper towel and plug in your iron. In circular movements move the hot iron over the paper towel (paper towel has to be over the dent and careful you don’t burn yourself). When the paper is mostly dry remove from the dent…that wasn’t!

WD- 40 saving walls since 1969!

WD- 40 saving walls since 1969!

My kids love to color and sometimes they become overzealous and color on every surface they could find. For their exploits, I keep handy a bottle of WD-40. Now my walls are not painted with water paint or any type of matt paint (WD-40 would ruin that paint job if that was the case) so it’s easy for me to apply the spray directly on the wall and wipe away the murals!

Window screen repairs using nail polish!

My window repair home to do list was so long and I had no idea how to fix those holes and keep the bugs out. But my buddy from upstairs came over and just started painting the holes with her clear nail polish. I was so grateful that the bugs would stay out and slightly annoyed that I didn’t think of doing that first!
